I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas in 1991, a Master of Arts degree in Theology from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1996, and a Doctorate in Philosophy in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas in 2001.
I have been invited back to teach at two of my alma maters, Texas Lutheran where I have lectured in both the undergraduate theology and psychology departments, and St. Mary's University where I have taught two of the core courses for the graduate marriage and family therapy department, Introduction to Clinical Practicum and Marital Therapy, for the last ten years, as well as Advanced Child Development for the last three years. I continue to serve as an MFT clinical supervisor for the Family Life Center, the training clinic for interns of the graduate department of Counseling and Human Services at St. Mary's, which I have also been doing for the last decade, as well as supervising post-graduate therapists in pursuit of full licensure privately.
I am a Clinical Member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy ( www.aamft.org ). I am an Approved Supervisor by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists ( http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/mft/ ), as well as the Texas State Board of Examiners of Licensed Professional Counselors (http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/lpc/). I have written articles for the Journal of Pastoral Care and Counseling and the national newsletter of the American Association for Play Therapy, but my main area of scholarly interest is in therapeutic humor and couples therapy.
I continue to serve as Executive Director of the Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center, a non-profit agency that has quadrupled in clients served, staff and offices since I took the position in 2003. I also own and operate, with my wife and fellow Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Ashley, Insight Education, LLC, which offers an opportunity for MFTs, LPCs, social workers and other mental health professionals to receive board-approved Continuing Education Units online on a variety of topics, from treating obsessive-compulsive disorder to dealing with infidelity, at their own pace and in their own setting ( www.mycounselingceus.com ). Ashley and I have been married for 12 years and have two energetic, wonderful children. You can learn more about me and my approach to therapy on my personal website www.nicholaswilkensphd.com .
