nicholas

Greetings! A little about me: I received my BA in English from Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas in 1991, an MA in Theology from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1996, and a PHD in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas in 2001. I’ve been invited back to teach at two of my alma maters, Texas Lutheran where I have lectured in both the undergraduate theology and psychology departments, and St. Mary's University where I served as Senior Lecturer/Professor Pro Rata/Clinical Supervisor for the graduate department of Marriage and Family Therapy for 15 years.  I have been in practice for over 25 years.

So, I could write out a few more paragraphs about my education and experience, but I do believe that nobody cares about how much you know unless they know how much you care.  And I do care.

The clients that I am most typically asked to see, and who I am most typically referred, are couples dealing with infidelity, couples that are deciding whether or not to divorce, men who are disgusted by the idea of coming to see a therapist, and clients with significant anxiety disorders, particularly OCD. Essentially, I am referred “tough clients” who haven’t done well with other therapists. I utilize a significant amount of evidence-based practices and intentionally therapeutic humor in everything that I do.

My wife Ashley and I share an office at ICFE as we are both couples therapists who met in training back in the late 90’s. We’ve been married since 2003 and have two kids who have been wonderful and terrible at the same time. You can learn more about me and my approach to therapy on my website www.nicholaswilkensphd.com .
